Episode 140 – Nick & Zack Keller, Chris Emgard & many more!

by Chris Thompson

With Nick & Zack Keller, Chris Emgard, Man Vs. Rock, Phil Kim & Jason Lenzi …

After last week’s SDCC round-up with James, Liz & Karl, it’s time for a jam-packed SDCC extravaganza as I sit down to chat with Nick & Zack Keller (Death Head), Chris Emgard (Mirror’s Edge: Exordium), Victor De Troy & Kevin Bieber (Man Vs. Rock), Phil Kim (Famous Monsters) and Jason Lenzi (co-founder of Bif Bang Pow!) – whew!

First up I spend time at the Dark Horse stand with Nick & Zack, followed by Chris; then I discover Victor & Kevin in the Small Press aisles; meet up with Phil at the Famous Monsters/American Gothic Press booth; and finish off at the Entertainment Earth booth with Jason. It’s a wonderful and varied series of talks with as much depth as we could manage in the time.

by Chris Thompson

With Matthew Rosenberg …

After last week’s chat with Injection‘s Declan Shalvey, this week I’m back with writer & Black Mask PR guru Matthew Rosenberg (We Can Never Go Home, 12 Reasons To Die, Secret Wars Journal) to discuss the stages of his career thus far.

Matthew & I chat about the crossover between comics and music, how he works with writing partner Patrick Kindlon, his own background in comics, and what he’s working on for Black Mask (and others) right now.

Episode 104 – Coming Home & Talking Indeh with Greg Ruth!

by Chris Thompson

With Greg Ruth …

After last week’s epic discussion with Emma Rios, Alison Sampson & David Lafuente at D.I.C.E. (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back with creator Greg Ruth (Conan, The Lost Boy, Indeh) to finish the discussion we began in Episode 101 and finally talk more about him.

If you’ve heard Greg & I before, then you know this is going to be another epic conversation – and sure enough, true to form, it is. Listen in as we catch up on what Greg’s been up to and how his process has developed, along with some interesting side-steps and tangents along the way.

Episode 60 – Discovering The Lost Boy with Greg Ruth!

by Chris Thompson

With Greg Ruth …

Following on from last week’s episode with Adam P. Knave (which you can listen to here) and my recent, curiously related, film podcast (which you can listen to here) I give in to fate to chat with writer/artist Greg Ruth (Freaks of the Heartland, Conan: Born on the Battlefield, The Lost Boy).

Greg is someone I’ve been meaning to speak with for a long while now and it seems the universe was somehow in agreement as the stars (and our schedules) finally aligned for it to happen this week.

We discuss how he got started, the way fine art differs from comic art, why we need more comics for kids, and what he’s doing to address that. Plus we delve into his long-awaited next project with Ethan Hawke (Indeh) which will finally see release in the not-too-distant future.

Episode 51 – Sunday Morning Service with Andy Belanger!

by Chris Thompson

With Andy Belanger …

After last week’s monumental 50th episode (which you can listen to right here), I finish up my San Diego Comic-Con coverage with a special interview conducted over breakfast with Andy Belanger (Kill Shakespeare, Bottle Of Awesome, Black Church). As with previous SDCC interviews, this is raw and unedited with a lot of ambient noise – but it’s more in keeping with the usual long-form discussion you’ve come to expect from Pop Culture Hound.

So settle in as Andy & I discuss his approach to storytelling, how he got started in comics, what motivates and inspires him, and explore some of the deeper subtext to be found in his work. We also delve into his work on Kill Shakespeare and look at how that’s evolved from the initial 12-issue series to the current 5-issue run.

Plus we tackle other questions like: Where did he find the amazing and talented Shari Chankhamma? What’s it like working with Conor McCreery & Anthony Del Col? How does it feel to have a whole generation of students base their image of Shakespearean icons on his work? And what does he really think about under-age drinking? It’s a fun interview filled with plenty of laughs and a few surprises – but seriously, would you expect anything less?

Episode 17 – Talking Comics with Jim Zub & Matt Pizzolo!

by Chris Thompson

With Jim Zub & Matt Pizzolo …

This week saw some rather interesting discussion and commentary after Jim Zubkavich (Skullkickers) did a post on his blog about The Reality of Mainstream Creator-Owned Comics. In the same week, Wired.com did a feature on Matt Pizzolo (Occupy Comics) who they referred to as World’s Most Wired Comics Creator.

I found them to be two clever, and potentially quite different, views of comics – so I tweeted the links to all who would listen, and was pleasantly surprised when first Matt and then Jim decided to tweet back. We chatted and I soon knew it had to be a podcast, even if we were spread across three different time-zones (GMT, EST & PST!)

So I’m pleased to present this very special episode, outside of our regular transmissions, with Jim Zub & Matt Pizzolo in conversation.
