Episode 150 – Talking Fight Club with Chuck Palahniuk!

by Chris Thompson

With Chuck Palahniuk …

For Episode 150 I’ve pulled out all the stops to get Fight Club 2‘s Chuck Palahniuk on the show to talk about what comics mean to him. Chuck shares his earliest comic memories, what lured him into this brave new world, how he approaches writing his scripts, and what themes he’s looking to explore with Fight Club 2. Plus he gives me the scoop on his plans for future comics work, including Fight Club 3!!!

Episode 81 – Hellboy Day with Mike Richardson & Friends!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Richardson & Friends …

Following on from this week’s chat with Mike Mignola (which can still be heard here) – I continue the Hellboy Day celebrations with Dark Horse Publisher Mike Richardson, Mouse Guard‘s David Petersen, and editor Scott Allie – as well as Maura McHugh & Kim Newman, who have just been announced as writers on the new Witchfinder series from Dark Horse Comics!

We chat about what Mike’s work, particularly on Hellboy, means to each of them personally; how it affects what they’re doing now; and what else they have coming up. It’s a fitting tribute to a man and a character who have endured so long, as well as spotlighting how that legacy has impacted others.

Episode 80 – Celebrating Hellboy Day with Mike Mignola!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Mignola …

After last week’s chat with Jai Nitz (which you can still listen to here), this time I check back in with Mike Mignola on the eve of Hellboy Day. Mike & I first spoke on the landmark 50th episode a few months back (which you can find right here), so it was a pleasure to speak again.

Mike & I discuss how he feels after twenty years, why he still struggles with confidence in his work, what he still wants to achieve, and why Dave Stewart is the best colorist in comics. It’s the perfect way to celebrate 20 years of Hellboy from Mike Mignola & Dark Horse Comics.

Episode 79 – Rediscovering the Dream Thief with Jai Nitz!

by Chris Thompson

With Jai Nitz …

After last week’s chat with Greg Rucka (which you can still listen to here), this time I catch up with Jai Nitz (Green Hornet, Paper Museum, El Diablo) who wrote my favourite mini-series of last year, Dream Thief, which has just been released in trade this week from Dark Horse Comics.

Jai & I discuss how he first broke into comics, what makes a good editor, the advantages (and disadvantages) that new creators face, and what’s coming up next for him & Dream Thief. It’s a great conversation with one of the hardest-working guys you may not yet know!

by Chris Thompson

With Art Baltazar & Franco …

How do you follow up last week’s revelations about Sam Humphries and his MySpace years? (which you can listen to here) … It’s not gonna be easy, but if anyone’s up to the task it’s Art Baltazar & Franco (Tiny Titans, Superman Family Adventures, Patrick The Wolf Boy) – the masterminds behind the revolutionary Aw Yeah Comics.

We discuss what brought them together, why this is their industry, what it takes to actually make comics, and how their latest book Itty Bitty Hellboy from Dark Horse Comics came to be. Episode 50 – To Hell & Back with Mike Mignola!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Mignola …

It’s a very exciting week as the Pop Culture Hound podcast hits the magic number 50! After 49 episodes, one special (with Alan Moore, no less) and a half-episode earlier this week, we’ve finally reached the half-century on our way to 100. To celebrate, I’ve pulled out all the stops to continue my run of stellar guests with someone I’ve been looking forward to … Mike Mignola. If you’ve been listening to the show you’ll know just how much I’ve enjoyed what Mike, and Dark Horse Comics, have been doing in recent times.

So sit back and relax as I chat with Mike Mignola about his work on Hellboy and the wider ‘Mignola-verse’. Find out how he got started, what he’d do if he were starting out now, how Hellboy came to be, and why it’s expanded. Plus we discuss his various collaborations with writers and artists, how he approaches his work, what drove him to pursue creator-owned, and how he actually feels about the ‘Mignola-verse’ tag. It’s a fascinating discussion, which had me as rapt as I hope you will be.
