Episode 22 – Vacationing with Christian Ward!

by Chris Thompson

With Christian Ward …

This week Taylor and I are joined live in the studio by a very special guest, but first we take some time out to look at one of Marvel Now’s more controversial releases, The Superior Spider-Man #1 by Dan Slott, Ryan Stegman & Edgar Delgado. Were we caught up in its web or did it just leave us hanging? You’ll have to wait and see.

Then we have a long and sexy chat (his words, not mine!) with writer/artist Christian Ward who joined us at PCH headquarters to discuss this week’s bumper-sized conclusion to Infinite Vacation. We talk about storytelling, his collaboration with Nick Spencer, what makes him cry, and that all-important topic: process. How many times can one man say ‘sexy’ during an interview? Listen and find out.

Episode 21 – Christmas with Emma Ríos & Guillermo Ortego!

by Chris Thompson

With Emma Rios & Guillermo Ortego …

Although our look at Marvel Now! may be winding down, this week Taylor and I have the hotly anticipated (at least by us) Morbius The Living Vampire #1 from Joe Keatinge & Richard Elson and New Avengers #1 from Jonathan Hickman & Steve Epting to enjoy.

We also present the long-overdue Christmas/New Year Special I recorded with artists Emma Ríos and Guillermo Ortego at Malta Comic-Con last month. Aside from sharing beers and cracking jokes, we make fun of my poor attempts at Spanish; discuss techniques and how they got started in the industry; share our mutual love for Brandon Graham, David Aja, and classic Westerns; talk about what’s coming up next; and much, much more!

All that and we continue to enjoy our BrewDog Craft Beers with the mind-blowingly strong Anarchist/Alchemist.

Episode 20 – Malta Comic-Con, Dave Gibbons & Herb Trimpe!

by Chris Thompson

With Dave Gibbons & Herb Trimpe …

This week I take a look back at the absolutely amazing Malta Comic-Con I’ve recently returned from – then Taylor & I discuss some of the gems found there, including Sean Azzopardi’s latest release Same Day Return.

We also present a very special panel I conducted with comics industry legends Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Secret Service) and Herb Trimpe (The Incredible Hulk, G.I. Joe) where we find out what these two gents share in common and how they feel about being elder statesmen.

Plus we continue to enjoy our BrewDog Craft Beers with the delicious Christmas Porter and Dead Pony Club.

Episode 19 – Changing with Ales Kot & Morgan Jeske!

by Chris Thompson

With Ales Kot & Morgan Jeske …

We’re a bit late this time around, but it’s not entirely hopeless as Taylor and I take a deeper look at Dennis Hopeless’ two contributions to Marvel Now! Avengers Arena #1 and Cable & X-Force #1.

Taylor also chats with Ales Kot (Wild Children) and Morgan Jeske (Disappearing Town) about working together on their new mini-series Change from Image Comics. Plus we continue to enjoy our BrewDog Craft Beers with the rather potent Dogma.

Episode 18 – with Ryan Ferrier from Challenger Comics!

by Chris Thompson

With Ryan Ferrier …

Taylor and I have mixed views about this week’s Marvel Now! books, and find we don’t see eye-to-eye with Daniel Way’s Thunderbolts #1 or Jonathan Hickman’s much-anticipated Avengers #1.

Taylor also chats with Ryan Ferrier (Tiger Lawyer and Challenger Comics) about his career thus far, how Challenger came to be, and where things are going next. Plus we enjoy our first sample of BrewDog Craft Beers, starting with their classic 5am Saint.

Episode 17 – Talking Comics with Jim Zub & Matt Pizzolo!

by Chris Thompson

With Jim Zub & Matt Pizzolo …

This week saw some rather interesting discussion and commentary after Jim Zubkavich (Skullkickers) did a post on his blog about The Reality of Mainstream Creator-Owned Comics. In the same week, Wired.com did a feature on Matt Pizzolo (Occupy Comics) who they referred to as World’s Most Wired Comics Creator.

I found them to be two clever, and potentially quite different, views of comics – so I tweeted the links to all who would listen, and was pleasantly surprised when first Matt and then Jim decided to tweet back. We chatted and I soon knew it had to be a podcast, even if we were spread across three different time-zones (GMT, EST & PST!)

So I’m pleased to present this very special episode, outside of our regular transmissions, with Jim Zub & Matt Pizzolo in conversation.

Episode 16 – with Dave Elliott from A1 & Atomeka Press!

by Chris Thompson

With Dave Elliott …

It’s a teeny tiny week for new Marvel Now! but at least it’s a good one with Matt Fraction & Mike Allred’s FF #1 … To celebrate, Taylor and I also take a look at Kodoja: Terror Mountain Showdown #2 plus the accompanying soundtrack from Big Pimp Jones. You may have heard us talk about issue 1 on our first episode, but if not then here’s your chance.

Plus, in a nice follow-up to last week’s interview with Ron & Josh from deviantART, I chat with industry legend Dave Elliott about his work with deviantART, what’s coming up for Atomeka Press, and how that ties in to his work with Titan Books. It all turns into a discussion about comics and the industry today, with some interesting stories about Dave’s time with Marvel before they launched the Ultimate line.

If that’s not enough, we also announce our first major sponsor … BrewDog Craft Beers who will be supplying us with drinks into the new year.

Our First Drinks Sponsor Is … BrewDog!

by Chris Thompson

On the eve of recording our sixteenth episode, I’m pleased to announce that BrewDog Craft Beers have agreed to come on board as the first major drinks sponsor for the Pop Culture Hound podcast!

BrewDog will be supplying us with a fine selection of their unique craft beers into the new year, so each week you can look forward to some brief tasting notes alongside our regular comics commentary.

If you haven’t checked out BrewDog before then I highly recommend it. Aside from the obvious canine comparisons (BrewDOG and PopCultureHOUND) I like to think there’s a similar independent aesthetic behind our two enterprises.

You can read more about BrewDog, where you can buy it, and what they have to offer on their website: www.brewdog.com.

And be sure to tell ’em Chris sent you.

Episode 15 – with Ron Martino & Josh Wattles from deviantART!

by Chris Thompson

With Ron Martino & Josh Wattles from deviantART …

In what proves to be the strongest week for Marvel Now! thus far, Taylor and I look at three highly-anticipated relaunch titles, including Rick Remender’s Captain America #1, Mark Waid’s Indestructible Hulk #1, and Kathryn Immonen’s Journey Into Mystery #646.

Then I chat with deviantART’s Ron Martino & Josh Wattles about the company’s new collaborative project, Odyssey II with Clive Barker. We discuss the essence of deviantART, how collaborative work is changing the community, the nature of ownership and entitlement, and where they see things going next.
