Episode 147 – In Conversation with Rachael Stott & Jessica Martin!

by Chris Thompson

With Rachael Stott & Jessica Martin …

On this episode, I go to the pub with rising star Rachael Stott (Star Trek, Doctor Who) to discuss how she broke in, the art of portfolio reviews, learning on the job, and the path her career has taken in the short time since.

Then, as an extra bonus, the second-half of the episode casts a spotlight on writer/artist Jessica Martin (It Girl, Vivacity) as she provides a walkthrough of her Elsie exhibition currently on display in the Orbital Gallery.

Episode 146 – In Conversation with Mark Buckingham!

by Chris Thompson

With Mark Buckingham …

On this episode, I sit down for a chat with writer/artist Mark Buckingham (Fables, Fairest, Miracleman). We discuss his early work as an animator with Aardman, working with Neil Gaiman on The Truth & Miracleman, his breakthrough as an inker in the ’90s, and what brought him back to pencilling again. We would’ve got further, but time was against us – so expect a follow-up soon.

Plus: as an extra bonus, the second-half of the episode features Mark walking guests through his recent exhibition at the Orbital Gallery, followed by a brief Q&A. There’s some really great stuff discussed throughout, so I hope you’ll stay with us through this slightly longer episode!

With Jay Faerber …

On this episode, I head to the pub with writer Jay Faerber (Copperhead, Noble Causes, Near Death) to discuss the ins-and-outs of his career thus far. We cover the early days of fan fiction, finally breaking in with the Big Two, taking the plunge into creator-owned work, and then the move into TV writing with all the numerous comics and other projects along the way.

Episode 144 – Doctor Who Comics Day Discussion Panel!

by Chris Thompson

With the Doctor Who writers …

Hello and welcome to Orbital In Conversation – the podcast of Orbital Comics in central London! We’re very excited to join the team at Multiversity Comics as not only are they an excellent group of people, but they share a similar level of taste and sensibility … It’s going to be a good fit. For these first two weeks we’ll be double-shipping episodes, so you can get a bit of a feel for us.

On this episode, I host a live discussion panel at Orbital Comics to celebrate Doctor Who Comics Day, featuring a number of creators behind Titan Comics’ Doctor Who line. It all starts with writers Paul Cornell, Al Ewing, Rob Williams & Nick Abadzis; and continues with artists Rachael Stott & Brian Williamson, alongside group editor Andrew James.

Episode 143 – In Conversation with Steve Orlando at SDCC!

by Chris Thompson

With Steve Orlando at SDCC …

On this week’s show, I’m joined by James & Liz for a wine-tasting under the guidance of writer Steve Orlando (Undertow, Virgil). Steve discusses the finer points of Californian pinot gris, then opens up about how he got the job on Midnighter at DC Comics, what plans he has for the series, and how his own experiences have informed the character.

This interview was conducted at an outdoor restaurant during the madness of San Diego Comic-Con International, so there is some background ambience, shall we say. It’s a little different to the norm, but then isn’t that what you’d expect of a wine-tasting podcast?

Episode 31 – The Strange Love of Jeremy Holt!

by Chris Thompson

With Jeremy Holt …

It’s another exciting transmission from the picturesque haven known as Portmeirion (aka ‘The Village’ from TV’s The Prisoner) as Taylor and I discuss the work of rising star Jeremy Holt.

We look at both of his 215 Ink releases, Southern Dog with Alex Diotto and Cobble Hill with Selena Goulding, and delve a little deeper into the world of creator-owned comics.

Taylor also chats with Jeremy about his work, his inspiration, and what it’s like to break into the industry from a practical perspective. If you’ve ever wondered how it’s done then there’s no better way to hear it than from someone who’s actually doing it.
