Episode 126 – Remembering My Friend, Herb Trimpe!

by Chris Thompson

With Herb Trimpe & Dave Gibbons …

After last week’s meeting of Chip Zdarsky and The Real/Fake Geeks, this time I’m back with the sad but honorable task of paying tribute to my good friend Herb Trimpe (Hulk, Shogun Warriors, G.I. Joe & so much more) who sadly passed away on Monday, April 13 2015.

It gets a bit emotional (and I’ve chosen not to edit that) as I share my knowledge of Herb’s work growing up, what it was like when we first met, and some of my memories of him since then. I also present the panel Herb & I did together at Malta Comic Con with Dave Gibbons in 2012.

Episode 115 – Chatting with Mast, Dayglo, Dialynas & Walta!

by Chris Thompson

With JL Mast, Rufus Dayglo, Mike Dialynas & Gabriel Hernandez Walta …

Following on from last episode with Doctor Who‘s Mike Collins (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back with the New Europe panel from the recent Malta Comic Con – featuring JL Mast, Rufus Dayglo, Michael Dialynas & Gabriel Hernandez Walta.

Mast, Rufus, Mike, Gabriel & I get into a fascinating discussion about the unique influences European creators bring to American comics; the wealth of opportunities now available to them; and how the comics scene in general is changing. It’s a wonderful insight from four very different creators and how they approach their work on a day-to-day basis!

Episode 114 – Doctoring Who with Mike Collins!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Collins …

After last episode with the amazing Gabriel Hardman & Corinna Bechko (which you can still listen to here), I’m back again with acclaimed Doctor Who artist & storyboarder Mike Collins at the recent Malta Comic Con.

Mike & I discuss starting out (including his rarely-seen collaboration with Alan Moore), what led to him become the Doctor Who guy, and his recent move into doing storyboards for the TV series. Mike’s had a rich career that rarely gets celebrated as it should, so this is a wonderful eye-opener!

With Gabriel Hardman & Corinna Bechko …

Following on from last episode with Leah Moore & John Reppion discussing Electricomics (which you can still listen to here), this week I’m back with the stellar team of Gabriel Hardman & Corinna Bechko (Heathentown, Planet of the Apes, the upcoming Invisible Republic) at the recent Malta Comic Con.

Gabriel, Corinna and I discuss how they each started out, when they first met, what prompted them to start working together, and what they’ve got coming up next. It’s a unique glimpse into a rich and creative partnership!

Episode 109 – Witness a Very NICE Reading with Mike Carey!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Carey …

Following on from last episode with John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back with The Unwritten‘s Mike Carey for a reading from his latest novel, House of War & Witness (co-written with his wife & daughter) at the NICE Convention in Bedford.

In addition to another great dramatic reading, Mike and I sit down for a Q & A to discuss historical fiction, what it’s like writing with your family, how he approaches different forms of writing, and what’s coming up next.

NB: The sound quality during the reading is not ideal, but still well worth listening to. It improves during the Q & A around the 18-19 minute mark.

Following on from last week’s exclusive presentation of Alan Moore & Lance Parkin in conversation at The Princes Charles Cinema in London (which you can still listen to here) I bring you a couple of panels from this year’s Malta Comic Con, featuring Mike Carey & Sean Phillips.

First up, Mike & Sean take centre stage for A Meeting of Legends;
then Mike goes solo for a reading from his forthcoming novel, The Girl With All The Gifts, followed by a Q & A. It’s a wonderful glimpse into the lives, careers, and creative processes of two industry heavyweights.

Episode 21 – Christmas with Emma Ríos & Guillermo Ortego!

by Chris Thompson

With Emma Rios & Guillermo Ortego …

Although our look at Marvel Now! may be winding down, this week Taylor and I have the hotly anticipated (at least by us) Morbius The Living Vampire #1 from Joe Keatinge & Richard Elson and New Avengers #1 from Jonathan Hickman & Steve Epting to enjoy.

We also present the long-overdue Christmas/New Year Special I recorded with artists Emma Ríos and Guillermo Ortego at Malta Comic-Con last month. Aside from sharing beers and cracking jokes, we make fun of my poor attempts at Spanish; discuss techniques and how they got started in the industry; share our mutual love for Brandon Graham, David Aja, and classic Westerns; talk about what’s coming up next; and much, much more!

All that and we continue to enjoy our BrewDog Craft Beers with the mind-blowingly strong Anarchist/Alchemist.

Episode 20 – Malta Comic-Con, Dave Gibbons & Herb Trimpe!

by Chris Thompson

With Dave Gibbons & Herb Trimpe …

This week I take a look back at the absolutely amazing Malta Comic-Con I’ve recently returned from – then Taylor & I discuss some of the gems found there, including Sean Azzopardi’s latest release Same Day Return.

We also present a very special panel I conducted with comics industry legends Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Secret Service) and Herb Trimpe (The Incredible Hulk, G.I. Joe) where we find out what these two gents share in common and how they feel about being elder statesmen.

Plus we continue to enjoy our BrewDog Craft Beers with the delicious Christmas Porter and Dead Pony Club.

Hugo Pratt’s CORTO MALTESE Comes Back To Malta

by Chris Thompson

My love affair with Hugo Pratt‘s Corto Maltese really took hold on my most recent trip to Italy. Although beloved by the French, Pratt was in fact an Italian who spent his formative years in Venice. There are numerous locations from Corto Maltese spread throughout the city, along with guidebooks to help you follow in the footsteps of the famous mariner.

So you can imagine my surprise when I returned to Malta this year to find an exhibition of Corto Maltese featuring reproductions and originals by the late Hugo Pratt. Set within one of the gallery spaces at Saint James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Valletta, the show is a joint project between Malta Comic Con and the French Embassy.

If you’ve never seen Corto Maltese before then you’re in for a real treat. Although many of the books are now out-of-print in English, a new edition of Ballad of the Salt Sea was released by Universe Publishing earlier this year.

For those who can’t make the show, I’ve taken a few photos along with a video walkthrough providing a brief glimpse of what you’re missing … Hopefully this will whet your appetite to discover more about the beauty and majesty of Corto Maltese.

You can read more about the history of the character and the exhibition in this article from the Times of Malta: www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20121129/arts-entertainment/Comic-book-hero-Corto-Maltese-comes-home.447480
