Episode 80 – Celebrating Hellboy Day with Mike Mignola!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Mignola …

After last week’s chat with Jai Nitz (which you can still listen to here), this time I check back in with Mike Mignola on the eve of Hellboy Day. Mike & I first spoke on the landmark 50th episode a few months back (which you can find right here), so it was a pleasure to speak again.

Mike & I discuss how he feels after twenty years, why he still struggles with confidence in his work, what he still wants to achieve, and why Dave Stewart is the best colorist in comics. It’s the perfect way to celebrate 20 years of Hellboy from Mike Mignola & Dark Horse Comics.

Episode 50 – To Hell & Back with Mike Mignola!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Mignola …

It’s a very exciting week as the Pop Culture Hound podcast hits the magic number 50! After 49 episodes, one special (with Alan Moore, no less) and a half-episode earlier this week, we’ve finally reached the half-century on our way to 100. To celebrate, I’ve pulled out all the stops to continue my run of stellar guests with someone I’ve been looking forward to … Mike Mignola. If you’ve been listening to the show you’ll know just how much I’ve enjoyed what Mike, and Dark Horse Comics, have been doing in recent times.

So sit back and relax as I chat with Mike Mignola about his work on Hellboy and the wider ‘Mignola-verse’. Find out how he got started, what he’d do if he were starting out now, how Hellboy came to be, and why it’s expanded. Plus we discuss his various collaborations with writers and artists, how he approaches his work, what drove him to pursue creator-owned, and how he actually feels about the ‘Mignola-verse’ tag. It’s a fascinating discussion, which had me as rapt as I hope you will be.

Episode 43 – Behold a Dark Horse with Scott Allie!

by Chris Thompson

With Scott Allie …

It’s a slightly shorter episode this week as I’ve just returned from the amazing 2D Comic Arts Festival in Derry, Northern Ireland. You can expect a full report on that soon, but in the meantime I’m pleased to present a very special interview with Dark Horse Comics Editor-in-Chief, Scott Allie.

Aside from being very generous and helpful to the show, Scott is the editor of the Mignola-verse line of books (which he has done for almost two decades) and is currently writing the Abe Sapien ongoing series with creator Mike Mignola. Scott & I chat about how he landed the role, his working relationship with Mike, what challenges they’ve faced as the line has expanded, and where they plan to take Abe in future. It’s a fascinating discussion that I hope will be the first of many.

Episode 41 – Rocking Out with the Subatomic Party Girls!

by Chris Thompson

With Chris Sims, Chad Bowers & Erica Henderson …

This week Taylor & I tackle three exciting new books, each with their own unique flavour. First up we take a bite out of Mike Mignola, John Arcudi & Kevin Nowlan’s Lobster Johnson: Satan Smells A Rat from Dark Horse Comics. Plus we take a look at the chemistry behind Michael D. Perkins & Will Perkins’ new release, Beware… Formula X from 215 Ink.

Then we tune in to Chris Sims, Chad Bowers & Erica Henderson’s poppy new production Subatomic Party Girls from Monkeybrain Comics. Chris, Chad, Erica & I chat about having a four-way, where Subatomic Party Girls came from, how comics’ criticism can feed into (or detract from) your own creativity, and why podcasting is a lot like any other creative collaboration.
