Episode 126 – Remembering My Friend, Herb Trimpe!

by Chris Thompson

With Herb Trimpe & Dave Gibbons …

After last week’s meeting of Chip Zdarsky and The Real/Fake Geeks, this time I’m back with the sad but honorable task of paying tribute to my good friend Herb Trimpe (Hulk, Shogun Warriors, G.I. Joe & so much more) who sadly passed away on Monday, April 13 2015.

It gets a bit emotional (and I’ve chosen not to edit that) as I share my knowledge of Herb’s work growing up, what it was like when we first met, and some of my memories of him since then. I also present the panel Herb & I did together at Malta Comic Con with Dave Gibbons in 2012.

Episode 113 – Meeting Gabriel Hardman & Corinna Bechko!

by Chris Thompson

With Gabriel Hardman & Corinna Bechko …

Following on from last episode with Leah Moore & John Reppion discussing Electricomics (which you can still listen to here), this week I’m back with the stellar team of Gabriel Hardman & Corinna Bechko (Heathentown, Planet of the Apes, the upcoming Invisible Republic) at the recent Malta Comic Con.

Gabriel, Corinna and I discuss how they each started out, when they first met, what prompted them to start working together, and what they’ve got coming up next. It’s a unique glimpse into a rich and creative partnership!

Episode 102 – Live From The Pub with Gerry Duggan!

by Chris Thompson

With Gerry Duggan …

After last week’s slightly different Episode 101 with the amazing Greg Ruth (which you can still listen to here), this time around I’m back – in the pub – with writer Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Nova, Hulk, The Infinite Horizon).

Listen as Gerry & I enjoy beer, peanuts & the obligatory pork scratchings; while discussing how he got started, what it’s like going from the comic shop to the bullpen, the kind of collaborations he enjoys, and what we can expect from him coming up … All backed by the live ‘ambience’ of the pub!

Episode 84 – Forging an Iron Fist with Kaare Andrews!

by Chris Thompson

With Kaare Andrews …

After last week’s chat with Rick Remender (which you can still listen to here), this time I catch up with writer/artist/all-round-creator-and-good-guy Kaare Andrews (The Incredible Hulk, A + X, Spider-Man: Reign) to talk about his run on Iron Fist which begins this week from Marvel Comics.

Kaare & I talk about everything from auteur theory to childhood comicbook memories – taking in groupthink, the debate over San Diego Comic-Con, the difference between comics and films, and why there aren’t more writer/artists these days. It’s a fun and fascinating discussion that will hopefully leave you thinking …

Episode 80 – Celebrating Hellboy Day with Mike Mignola!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Mignola …

After last week’s chat with Jai Nitz (which you can still listen to here), this time I check back in with Mike Mignola on the eve of Hellboy Day. Mike & I first spoke on the landmark 50th episode a few months back (which you can find right here), so it was a pleasure to speak again.

Mike & I discuss how he feels after twenty years, why he still struggles with confidence in his work, what he still wants to achieve, and why Dave Stewart is the best colorist in comics. It’s the perfect way to celebrate 20 years of Hellboy from Mike Mignola & Dark Horse Comics.

Episode 55 – Plunging Into The Depths with Ian Churchill!

by Chris Thompson

With Ian Churchill …

Aw yeah, we’re back again! Following my last interview with Art Baltazar & Franco (which you can listen to here) and my first film podcast (which you can listen to here) I went along to the recent N.I.C.E. convention in Bedford where I conducted a panel with Ian Churchill (Marineman, Hulk, Supergirl).

We discuss how Ian broke into the industry, what comics and films influenced him as a child, how his style has developed over time, and what made him take the plunge (pun intended) and dive into creator-owned comics with Marineman.

To follow it up, we spent a little time after the panel discussing what he could say about his upcoming book The Revenger with Jonathan Ross, and addressed the status of the long-awaited Marineman Volume 2 from Image Comics.

Episode 50 – To Hell & Back with Mike Mignola!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Mignola …

It’s a very exciting week as the Pop Culture Hound podcast hits the magic number 50! After 49 episodes, one special (with Alan Moore, no less) and a half-episode earlier this week, we’ve finally reached the half-century on our way to 100. To celebrate, I’ve pulled out all the stops to continue my run of stellar guests with someone I’ve been looking forward to … Mike Mignola. If you’ve been listening to the show you’ll know just how much I’ve enjoyed what Mike, and Dark Horse Comics, have been doing in recent times.

So sit back and relax as I chat with Mike Mignola about his work on Hellboy and the wider ‘Mignola-verse’. Find out how he got started, what he’d do if he were starting out now, how Hellboy came to be, and why it’s expanded. Plus we discuss his various collaborations with writers and artists, how he approaches his work, what drove him to pursue creator-owned, and how he actually feels about the ‘Mignola-verse’ tag. It’s a fascinating discussion, which had me as rapt as I hope you will be.

Episode 43 – Behold a Dark Horse with Scott Allie!

by Chris Thompson

With Scott Allie …

It’s a slightly shorter episode this week as I’ve just returned from the amazing 2D Comic Arts Festival in Derry, Northern Ireland. You can expect a full report on that soon, but in the meantime I’m pleased to present a very special interview with Dark Horse Comics Editor-in-Chief, Scott Allie.

Aside from being very generous and helpful to the show, Scott is the editor of the Mignola-verse line of books (which he has done for almost two decades) and is currently writing the Abe Sapien ongoing series with creator Mike Mignola. Scott & I chat about how he landed the role, his working relationship with Mike, what challenges they’ve faced as the line has expanded, and where they plan to take Abe in future. It’s a fascinating discussion that I hope will be the first of many.

We also present a very special panel I conducted with comics industry legends Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Secret Service) and Herb Trimpe (The Incredible Hulk, G.I. Joe) where we find out what these two gents share in common and how they feel about being elder statesmen.

Episode 15 – with Ron Martino & Josh Wattles from deviantART!

by Chris Thompson

With Ron Martino & Josh Wattles from deviantART …

In what proves to be the strongest week for Marvel Now! thus far, Taylor and I look at three highly-anticipated relaunch titles, including Rick Remender’s Captain America #1, Mark Waid’s Indestructible Hulk #1, and Kathryn Immonen’s Journey Into Mystery #646.

Then I chat with deviantART’s Ron Martino & Josh Wattles about the company’s new collaborative project, Odyssey II with Clive Barker. We discuss the essence of deviantART, how collaborative work is changing the community, the nature of ownership and entitlement, and where they see things going next.
