PCH @ The Movies – Love Is Strange with Ira Sachs!

by Chris Thompson

With Ira Sachs, director of Love Is Strange …

After my most recent film-based podcast with Sarah Snook to discuss her role in the mind-bending sci-fi thriller Predestination (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back with Ira Sachs, director, producer and co-writer of the wonderfully touching new film, Love Is Strange.

Co-written with Mauricio Zacharias, Love Is Strange tells the story of loving couple Ben & George. After getting married, George is fired from his teaching post, forcing the two men to stay with friends separately while they sell their place and look for cheaper housing – a situation that weighs heavily on all involved.

Ira and I discuss the nature of love, making something timeless that is still very much of its time, how teaching has impacted upon his own personal creativity, and what conclusions viewers can draw from the film. Ira makes for a wonderful interview, and I only wish we’d had more time!

PCH @ The Movies – Beyond Clueless with Charlie Lyne!

by Chris Thompson

With Charlie Lyne, writer/director of Beyond Clueless …

After my original film-based podcast with Graham Reynolds to discuss his work scoring Richard Linklater’s brilliant Before Midnight (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back with director Charlie Lyne to examine his debut feature, Beyond Clueless. Narrated by The Craft‘s Fairuza Balk, the film offers an intelligent dissection of the teen film genre – peeling back the many layers to expose what lies beneath.

Charlie, known primarily for his work with Ultra Culture & The Guardian, has created a tight film that will leave you questioning the teen flicks you’ve previously taken for granted. Featuring a score by indie darlings Summer Camp, Beyond Clueless shines a light on this shadowy and less-explored aspect of cinema.

Charlie kindly agreed to chat with me about how he first started out as a film critic, what steps he took to make his dreams come true, and how he brought Beyond Clueless from concept to creation. It’s a fascinating glimpse into another world, but all done with the usual PCH flair and style. I hope you’ll join me on this new adventure into the world of film.

Episode 99 – A Very Goon-ish Occasion with Eric Powell!

by Chris Thompson

With Eric Powell …

Following on from last week’s chat with Charles Brownstein of the CBLDF (which you can still listen to here), this time around I’m back with The Goon creator, Eric Powell, to discuss his new mini-series Occasion Of Revenge.

Eric & I discuss how he started out in comics, the changes in his work and influences since that time, how to stay motivated and on top of things when ‘life happens’, and what people can expect from the series going forward. It’s a very frank and honest look at the creative life – and what that entails.

Episode 91 – Underneath the C.O.W.L. with Kyle Higgins!

by Chris Thompson

With Kyle Higgins …

Following on from last week’s episode with the amazing Steve Skroce (which you can still listen to here), this time around I sit down with writer Kyle Higgins to discuss his new series C.O.W.L. from Image Comics.

Kyle and I chat about how he got started, what it’s like working on a major franchise such as Batman, why now was the right time to do C.O.W.L. and what we can expect from the series going forward. Plus we discuss his other work, including the critically-acclaimed short film The League.

Episode 84 – Forging an Iron Fist with Kaare Andrews!

by Chris Thompson

With Kaare Andrews …

After last week’s chat with Rick Remender (which you can still listen to here), this time I catch up with writer/artist/all-round-creator-and-good-guy Kaare Andrews (The Incredible Hulk, A + X, Spider-Man: Reign) to talk about his run on Iron Fist which begins this week from Marvel Comics.

Kaare & I talk about everything from auteur theory to childhood comicbook memories – taking in groupthink, the debate over San Diego Comic-Con, the difference between comics and films, and why there aren’t more writer/artists these days. It’s a fun and fascinating discussion that will hopefully leave you thinking …

PCH @ The Movies – Before Midnight with Graham Reynolds!

by Chris Thompson

With Graham Reynolds, composer of Before Midnight …

In the first of a series of film-based podcasts, I look at Richard Linklater‘s Before Midnight. Not only was it my favourite film of 2013, but it was also the third film in one of my all-time favourite series – following the classic Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004).

When we meet Jesse (Ethan Hawke) & Celine (Julie Delpy) this time around, they’ve been together for the last eight years and have started to become like any other couple who have been together for a while. It’s the same characters you know and love, but real life has crept in and made its presence known. The idealised romance of the first two films has given way to the realities of day-to-day life, including the arrival of twin girls.

Unlike the previous films, Before Midnight is also the first to feature an original score, composed by Austin-based musician and frequent Richard Linklater collaborator, Graham Reynolds (A Scanner Darkly, Bernie, I’ll Come Running). The soundtrack proved to be a haunting addition to an already stellar production and (like the film itself) has stayed with me long after the credits rolled.

Graham agreed to be my first guest on PCH @ The Movies, and so we talked about why he got into music, what led him to doing film scores, how he first met Richard Linklater, and what it was like working on Before Midnight. It’s a fascinating glimpse into another world, but all done with the usual PCH flair and style. I hope you’ll join me on this new adventure into the world of film beyond comics.
