Episode 149 – To Infinity & Beyond with Alan Davis!

by Chris Thompson

With Alan Davis …

Last weekend I had the opportunity to host at the annual N.I.C.E. convention in Bedford, so here is my interview with legendary writer/artist Alan Davis! Alan discusses how he broke into comics, working with Alan Moore & Chris Claremont, why he’s prepared to say no to certain work, and his new assignment with Jim Starlin.

Episode 143 – In Conversation with Steve Orlando at SDCC!

by Chris Thompson

With Steve Orlando at SDCC …

On this week’s show, I’m joined by James & Liz for a wine-tasting under the guidance of writer Steve Orlando (Undertow, Virgil). Steve discusses the finer points of Californian pinot gris, then opens up about how he got the job on Midnighter at DC Comics, what plans he has for the series, and how his own experiences have informed the character.

This interview was conducted at an outdoor restaurant during the madness of San Diego Comic-Con International, so there is some background ambience, shall we say. It’s a little different to the norm, but then isn’t that what you’d expect of a wine-tasting podcast?

Episode 121 – In Conversation with Dustin Nguyen & more!

by Chris Thompson

With Dustgin Nguyen, Owen Johnson & John Pearson …

After last week’s Angoulême BD Festival special, this time I’m back with the incredible Dustin Nguyen to discuss his exciting new sci-fi series, Descender, from Image Comics.

Dustin and I discuss how he started out, the way his art has changed and evolved over time, what it’s like writing scripts as opposed to drawing comics, and how he approaches realism in a series like Descender.

Plus, as an extra bonus, I chat with creators Owen Michael Johnson & John Pearson about their new project, Beast Wagon, which is currently on Kickstarter. We discuss how they met, where the idea came from, and what they’ve got planned.

Episode 111 – Pledging to the Wytches with Scott Snyder!

by Chris Thompson

With Scott Synder …

Following on from my last episode with the legendary Carlos Pacheco at NICE Convention in Bedford (which you can still listen to here), this week I’m back just in time for the holidays with the long-awaited follow-up to Episode 100 with Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire, Wytches).

Scott and I discuss the overwhelming response to Wytches, his future plans for Batman, what teaching means to him as a writer, and address a few of the rumours he’s been attached to lately. If you only listen to one podcast this year then you’ve been missing out!

Episode 102 – Live From The Pub with Gerry Duggan!

by Chris Thompson

With Gerry Duggan …

After last week’s slightly different Episode 101 with the amazing Greg Ruth (which you can still listen to here), this time around I’m back – in the pub – with writer Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Nova, Hulk, The Infinite Horizon).

Listen as Gerry & I enjoy beer, peanuts & the obligatory pork scratchings; while discussing how he got started, what it’s like going from the comic shop to the bullpen, the kind of collaborations he enjoys, and what we can expect from him coming up … All backed by the live ‘ambience’ of the pub!

Episode 100 – Going Batty & Beyond with Scott Snyder!

by Chris Thompson

With Scott Synder …

After last week’s chat with The Goon‘s Eric Powell (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back for the BIG ONE – the long-awaited Episode 100 with Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire, and the upcoming Wytches).

In a very personal (and quite different) interview, Scott and I discuss what comics mean to him, the role his family have played in his career, how he deals with constant criticism and scrutiny, what it’s like chatting with Grant Morrison, and some of the lessons he’s learned along the way. It’s a very real glimpse behind-the-scenes of one of today’s best-selling writers.

Episode 91 – Underneath the C.O.W.L. with Kyle Higgins!

by Chris Thompson

With Kyle Higgins …

Following on from last week’s episode with the amazing Steve Skroce (which you can still listen to here), this time around I sit down with writer Kyle Higgins to discuss his new series C.O.W.L. from Image Comics.

Kyle and I chat about how he got started, what it’s like working on a major franchise such as Batman, why now was the right time to do C.O.W.L. and what we can expect from the series going forward. Plus we discuss his other work, including the critically-acclaimed short film The League.

Episode 80 – Celebrating Hellboy Day with Mike Mignola!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Mignola …

After last week’s chat with Jai Nitz (which you can still listen to here), this time I check back in with Mike Mignola on the eve of Hellboy Day. Mike & I first spoke on the landmark 50th episode a few months back (which you can find right here), so it was a pleasure to speak again.

Mike & I discuss how he feels after twenty years, why he still struggles with confidence in his work, what he still wants to achieve, and why Dave Stewart is the best colorist in comics. It’s the perfect way to celebrate 20 years of Hellboy from Mike Mignola & Dark Horse Comics.

Episode 76 – Live from Angoulême with Paul Pope & friends!

by Chris Thompson

With Paul Pope, Natalie Nourigat & Nicholas Hitori De …

Following on from last week’s Angoulême special with Joe Keatinge & friends (which you can still listen to here) – this week I conclude my report from the 41st Festival International de la Bande Dessinée in Angoulême with Paul Pope, Natalie Nourigat & Nicholas Hitori De!

First up, I chat with the talented Natalie Nourigat & Nicholas Hitori De about art, travel, and what it’s like working with Jamie S. Rich. Then I present Paul Pope’s discussion from Angoulême, including my scene-stealing question (okay, I may be a little biased on that one!) … The sound isn’t ideal, but hopefully you can hang in there for it.

Episode 44 – Getting Mired Down with Becky Cloonan!

by Chris Thompson

With Becky Cloonan …

Taylor & I continue our look at this year’s Eisner nominees with a focus on the self-published work of Becky Cloonan. Becky is nominated in the category of Best Single Issue for The Mire, and has just released her latest mini-comic, Demeter, through her own Ink & Thunder label. We look at the two books in detail and discuss why we love Cloonan’s work so much. It’s perfect timing as this week also sees the release of her latest project, The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, from Dark Horse Comics. You can hear a full review of Killjoys #1, along with a very special interview, next week.

If that’s not enough, Becky also drops in to discuss her work and process, particularly when it comes to self-publishing. We look at her early days producing mini-comics with the Meathaus collective, how her approach differs from black & white to color, the overall writing and scripting process, what it means to be nominated for an Eisner, and her collaboration with Gerard Way & Shaun Simon on The Killjoys. It’s a great opportunity to understand the creative process from the point where writing and art meet.
