Episode 129 – The Real/Fake Geeks Tackle Secret Wars!

by Chris Thompson

With Maria Norris & Secret Wars …

Following on from the recent chaos of Nick Marino & Daniel Arruda Massa, this week I’m back with Maria Norris as The Real/Fake Geeks take on Jonathan Hickman‘s epic Secret Wars!

To coincide with this year’s Free Comic Book Day, we look at what you need to know going into this major Marvel event. Plus we discuss Marvel’s FCBD offerings and take a look at the new Marvel Previews in an effort to make sense of it all. If that’s not enough, we also share our thoughts on Avengers: Age Of Ultron and how it relates to us as comics fans.

Episode 110 – A Truly Marvel-ous Career with Carlos Pacheco!

by Chris Thompson

With Carlos Pacheco …

After last episode’s reading and discussion with The Unwritten‘s Mike Carey (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back for a very special career retrospective featuring legendary Marvel & DC creator Carlos Pacheco at the most recent NICE Convention in Bedford.

Carlos and I look back at his early days in Spain, how he eventually cracked the elusive American market, what challenges he’s faced along the way, and where he’s hoping to go next.

Episode 53 – Making A Sacrifice with Sam Humphries!

by Chris Thompson

With Sam Humphries …

Hot on the heels of last week’s interview with rising star Joshua Williamson (which you can find here), I chat with another burgeoning talent in the form of Sam Humphries (Our Love Is Real, Uncanny X-Force, Avengers: A.I.) whose self-published series Sacrifice is collected by Dark Horse Comics this week.

We talk about how he was destined for comics, why self-publishing is so important, discovering your limitations, and what makes Sacrifice such a personal work. It’s a fun and interesting discussion about what it takes to make it in comics and how it can sometimes take years to be an overnight success.

Episode 24 – Getting Ugly with Ken Kristensen & Ryan Estrada!

by Chris Thompson

With Ken Kristensen & Ryan Estrada …

Marvel Now! ends on a high (at least for us) with Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie’s Young Avengers #1, and Sam Humphries & Ron Garney’s Uncanny X-Force #1.

If that’s not enough, we also have TWO big interviews for you to enjoy … First up, I talk with Ken Kristensen, writer/co-creator of Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth, which proved to be a surprise hit from Image Comics last week. We discuss the idea behind the book, how his collaboration with artist MK Perker came to be, and why Todd is more a crime book than anything else.

Then Taylor chats with creator Ryan Estrada, who is currently on the tail end of an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign for The Whole Story. They talk about comics, travel, Kickstarter success, and how to forge your own path in the industry today.

Episode 21 – Christmas with Emma Ríos & Guillermo Ortego!

by Chris Thompson

With Emma Rios & Guillermo Ortego …

Although our look at Marvel Now! may be winding down, this week Taylor and I have the hotly anticipated (at least by us) Morbius The Living Vampire #1 from Joe Keatinge & Richard Elson and New Avengers #1 from Jonathan Hickman & Steve Epting to enjoy.

We also present the long-overdue Christmas/New Year Special I recorded with artists Emma Ríos and Guillermo Ortego at Malta Comic-Con last month. Aside from sharing beers and cracking jokes, we make fun of my poor attempts at Spanish; discuss techniques and how they got started in the industry; share our mutual love for Brandon Graham, David Aja, and classic Westerns; talk about what’s coming up next; and much, much more!

All that and we continue to enjoy our BrewDog Craft Beers with the mind-blowingly strong Anarchist/Alchemist.

Episode 18 – with Ryan Ferrier from Challenger Comics!

by Chris Thompson

With Ryan Ferrier …

Taylor and I have mixed views about this week’s Marvel Now! books, and find we don’t see eye-to-eye with Daniel Way’s Thunderbolts #1 or Jonathan Hickman’s much-anticipated Avengers #1.

Taylor also chats with Ryan Ferrier (Tiger Lawyer and Challenger Comics) about his career thus far, how Challenger came to be, and where things are going next. Plus we enjoy our first sample of BrewDog Craft Beers, starting with their classic 5am Saint.

by Chris Thompson

With Si Spurrier, Liam Sharp & Ben Abernathy …

It’s the first really big week for Marvel Now! and that means not one, not two, but FIVE new books to look at … This week we investigate Avengers Assemble #9, Fantastic Four #1, Thor: God Of Thunder #1, All-New X-Men #1, and X-Men: Legacy #1 – and present another TWO interviews for your listening pleasure.

First up, we chat with up-and-coming writer Simon Spurrier (X-Club, Crossed) about his first ongoing Marvel gig and what plans he has for X-Men: Legacy long-term. Then Taylor catches up with Liam Sharp and Ben Abernathy, two of the key creative minds behind the app that’s more than an app, Madefire.

Episode 11 – with Paul Allor, Larry Tye & Marvel Now!

by Chris Thompson

With Larry Tye …

Join Taylor & I as we have an in-depth discussion about the six new tales featured in Marvel Now! Point One – which form an introduction to the upcoming Secret Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, Young Avengers, FF, and Cable & X-Force series.

From there we shift gears to throw the spotlight on up-and-coming writer Paul Allor who has made his mark on the industry with Orc Girl, various short stories at clockworkcomic.com and, more recently, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fugitoid one-shot for IDW Publishing.

Finally I present my interview with Larry Tye (author of Superman: The High-Flying History of America’s Most Enduring Hero) from this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Episode 10 – with Victor Ochoa from Nobodies & Marvel Now!

by Chris Thompson

With Victor Ochoa …

We’re baaaaaack! After a week off to catch our breath and try to regain some semblance of our lives, Taylor and I return to tackle the oncoming storm that is Marvel Now! First up we discuss Jeff Parker, Carlo Pagulayan & Wellinton Alves’ RED SHE-HULK before diving into Rick Remender & John Cassaday’s highly-anticipated UNCANNY AVENGERS.

We then take a look at NOBODIES Volume 1, while Taylor discusses Volume 2 (which is wrapping up a very successful Kickstarter campaign) with series editor and founder Victor Ochoa. For those who are lucky enough to be at this weekend’s New York Comic-Con (NYCC) you can find Victor (and NOBODIES) in Artist’s Alley at Table B6. Why not stop by and tell him we sent you?

And if that’s not enough, this episode also features the debut of a previously unreleased track by the legendary Shaky Kane! Entitled Big Red Planet, we defy you not to let this catchy tune burrow it’s way into your brain and stay there …
