Episode 127 – Live from London Super Comic Con 2015!

by Chris Thompson

Live from London Super Comic Con …

Following on from last week’s tribute to my good friend Herb Trimpe, this time I’m back with a series of interviews recorded *live* in the inaugural Podcast Alley at the recent London Super Comic Con.

First up, Alex Paknadel chats about his new series Arcadia from Boom! Studios, then I ‘find’ Sam Read to discuss his work with Comix Tribe, Martin Hayes & Chris Askham come by to talk Abominable Glory, and 2000AD‘s Mike Molcher pops in to hype their podcast & other activities.

As if that’s not enough, I’m also joined at the pub by Hunter Gorinson & Andy Liegl from Valiant Entertainment for a post-con drink. We chat about what’s happening in their world, where readers can start exploring the Valiant universe, and how they found their trip to London.

Episode 126 – Remembering My Friend, Herb Trimpe!

by Chris Thompson

With Herb Trimpe & Dave Gibbons …

After last week’s meeting of Chip Zdarsky and The Real/Fake Geeks, this time I’m back with the sad but honorable task of paying tribute to my good friend Herb Trimpe (Hulk, Shogun Warriors, G.I. Joe & so much more) who sadly passed away on Monday, April 13 2015.

It gets a bit emotional (and I’ve chosen not to edit that) as I share my knowledge of Herb’s work growing up, what it was like when we first met, and some of my memories of him since then. I also present the panel Herb & I did together at Malta Comic Con with Dave Gibbons in 2012.

Episode 125 – The Real/Fake Geeks Meet Chip Zdarsky!

by Chris Thompson

With Chip Zdarsky & Maria Norris …

After last week’s episode with John Allison, this time I’m back with Maria for another instalment of The Real/Fake Geeks – wherein we introduce Chip Zdarsky (Sex Criminals, Howard The Duck) to the wonder of Garkfunkel’s a.k.a. the UK version of Applebee’s!

The three of us chat about Chip’s early years in comics, what he did after that (and what brought him back), how he deals with the legions of new and diverse fans, and what he has planned for Howard The Duck going forward. It’s a fun and candid interview with the usual Zdarsky twist!

Episode 124 – In Conversation with John Allison & #Furious7!

by Chris Thompson

With John Allison & Furious 7 …

After last week’s debut of The Real/Fake Geeks segment with Maria Norris, this time I’m back with creator John Allison (Bad Machinery, Scary Go Round, Bobbins) to discuss the ‘return’ of Giant Days from Boom! Studios under their Boom! Box imprint.

John & I discuss how he first started out, the early days of webcomics when Geocities was still a thing, how people can become so invested in a set of characters, and what he’s planning to do going forward.

Then as an added bonus, we debut another new voice, Chad Armstrong, to discuss the brand new Fast & Furious 7 film. Chad & I chat about what we enjoyed most, how they handled the sad passing of star Paul Walker, and what people can look forward to if they’re on the fence about seeing it.

Episode 123 – The Real/Fake Geeks Debut with a Boom!

by Chris Thompson

With Maria Norris …

After last week’s episode with Nick Roche & Scott McCloud, this time I’m back with a brand new segment we’re calling The Real/Fake Geeks. Each month (or thereabouts) Maria Norris & I will create a primer based around a particular company, character or event.

In this first instalment, I interview Maria about her experience with comics – giving you a little background on where she’s come from – then we take a look at Boom! Studios burgeoning Boom! Box imprint and what that entails.

We discuss the ways in which comics (and the associated community) are diversifying, what impact these changes are having, and how companies like Boom! are addressing them – particularly in terms of their mandate to ‘Push Comics Forward’.

Episode 122 – In Conversation with Nick Roche & Scott McCloud!

by Chris Thompson

With Nick Roche & Scott McCloud …

After last week’s chat with Descender‘s Dustin Nguyen, followed by Beast Wagon‘s Owen Johnson & John Pearson, this time I’m back with Nick Roche (Transformers, Monster Motors, New Warriors) to launch the Irish Invasion exhibition in the Orbital Gallery.

Nick & I discuss the burgeoning creative scene in Ireland right now, how he first started out in comics, the perils of being ‘typecast’ as a certain kind of creator, and where he sees himself going next.

Then, as an extra bonus, I present my Q&A with Scott McCloud from his signing of The Sculptor earlier this month. We delve into his approach, what the book means to him, and how it feels to be putting out new sequential work for the first time in many years.

With Dustgin Nguyen, Owen Johnson & John Pearson …

After last week’s Angoulême BD Festival special, this time I’m back with the incredible Dustin Nguyen to discuss his exciting new sci-fi series, Descender, from Image Comics.

Dustin and I discuss how he started out, the way his art has changed and evolved over time, what it’s like writing scripts as opposed to drawing comics, and how he approaches realism in a series like Descender.

Plus, as an extra bonus, I chat with creators Owen Michael Johnson & John Pearson about their new project, Beast Wagon, which is currently on Kickstarter. We discuss how they met, where the idea came from, and what they’ve got planned.

Episode 117 – In Conversation with Dave Gibbons!

by Chris Thompson

With Dave Gibbons …

Following on from last week’s show with Kurtis Wiebe and friends, this time I’m back with Comics Laureate and all-round good guy Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Green Lantern, Kingsman: The Secret Service).

Dave and I met up in his home studio for an exhaustive (though hopefully not exhausting) look back at his career so far – leading up to the release of the new Kingsman graphic novel/film with Mark Millar & Matthew Vaughn.

We discuss how he started out in comics, his days as a real-life superhero with Tornado, the ways in which Watchmen & Kingsman have differed for him, and what people can expect from his role as Comics Laureate for the newly established CLAw (Comics Literacy Awareness) charity.
