Episode 117 – In Conversation with Dave Gibbons!

by Chris Thompson

With Dave Gibbons …

Following on from last week’s show with Kurtis Wiebe and friends, this time I’m back with Comics Laureate and all-round good guy Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Green Lantern, Kingsman: The Secret Service).

Dave and I met up in his home studio for an exhaustive (though hopefully not exhausting) look back at his career so far – leading up to the release of the new Kingsman graphic novel/film with Mark Millar & Matthew Vaughn.

We discuss how he started out in comics, his days as a real-life superhero with Tornado, the ways in which Watchmen & Kingsman have differed for him, and what people can expect from his role as Comics Laureate for the newly established CLAw (Comics Literacy Awareness) charity.

Episode 116 – In Conversation with Kurtis Wiebe & Friends!

by Chris Thompson

With Kurtis Wiebe & Friends …

On this week’s show I sit down for a pint with acclaimed writer Kurtis Wiebe (Rat Queens, Peter Panzerfaust, and the upcoming Pisces) who is in town for this weekend’s Demon Con in Maidstone, Kent.

Kurtis & I are joined by his partner Shannon Woodhouse, who runs the successful merchandise/clothing line at RatQueens.com – and Maria Norris, a PhD candidate who has been doing some excellent work on Comics & Human Rights for the London School of Economics blog.

Together we discuss the future of Rat Queens, the problem of unflattering clothing fits, how body image (and other issues) affect both men and women, and what else he has coming up in the near future. It’s a fun and relaxed interview conducted in the way they all should be – over drinks!

Episode 115 – Chatting with Mast, Dayglo, Dialynas & Walta!

by Chris Thompson

With JL Mast, Rufus Dayglo, Mike Dialynas & Gabriel Hernandez Walta …

Following on from last episode with Doctor Who‘s Mike Collins (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back with the New Europe panel from the recent Malta Comic Con – featuring JL Mast, Rufus Dayglo, Michael Dialynas & Gabriel Hernandez Walta.

Mast, Rufus, Mike, Gabriel & I get into a fascinating discussion about the unique influences European creators bring to American comics; the wealth of opportunities now available to them; and how the comics scene in general is changing. It’s a wonderful insight from four very different creators and how they approach their work on a day-to-day basis!

Episode 114 – Doctoring Who with Mike Collins!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Collins …

After last episode with the amazing Gabriel Hardman & Corinna Bechko (which you can still listen to here), I’m back again with acclaimed Doctor Who artist & storyboarder Mike Collins at the recent Malta Comic Con.

Mike & I discuss starting out (including his rarely-seen collaboration with Alan Moore), what led to him become the Doctor Who guy, and his recent move into doing storyboards for the TV series. Mike’s had a rich career that rarely gets celebrated as it should, so this is a wonderful eye-opener!

Gabriel, Corinna and I discuss how they each started out, when they first met, what prompted them to start working together, and what they’ve got coming up next. It’s a unique glimpse into a rich and creative partnership!

Episode 111 – Pledging to the Wytches with Scott Snyder!

by Chris Thompson

With Scott Synder …

Following on from my last episode with the legendary Carlos Pacheco at NICE Convention in Bedford (which you can still listen to here), this week I’m back just in time for the holidays with the long-awaited follow-up to Episode 100 with Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire, Wytches).

Scott and I discuss the overwhelming response to Wytches, his future plans for Batman, what teaching means to him as a writer, and address a few of the rumours he’s been attached to lately. If you only listen to one podcast this year then you’ve been missing out!

Episode 110 – A Truly Marvel-ous Career with Carlos Pacheco!

by Chris Thompson

With Carlos Pacheco …

After last episode’s reading and discussion with The Unwritten‘s Mike Carey (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back for a very special career retrospective featuring legendary Marvel & DC creator Carlos Pacheco at the most recent NICE Convention in Bedford.

Carlos and I look back at his early days in Spain, how he eventually cracked the elusive American market, what challenges he’s faced along the way, and where he’s hoping to go next.

Episode 109 – Witness a Very NICE Reading with Mike Carey!

by Chris Thompson

With Mike Carey …

Following on from last episode with John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back with The Unwritten‘s Mike Carey for a reading from his latest novel, House of War & Witness (co-written with his wife & daughter) at the NICE Convention in Bedford.

In addition to another great dramatic reading, Mike and I sit down for a Q & A to discuss historical fiction, what it’s like writing with your family, how he approaches different forms of writing, and what’s coming up next.

NB: The sound quality during the reading is not ideal, but still well worth listening to. It improves during the Q & A around the 18-19 minute mark.

Episode 108 – Sensing Dredd with John Wagner & Ezquerra!

by Chris Thompson

With John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra …

After my last discussion with Jeff Smith as part of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival (which you can still listen to here), this time I’m back with Judge Dredd creators John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra at the recent NICE Convention in Bedford.

Instead of rehashing the same old stories about Dredd, John & Carlos open up about how they started out and the kind of stories they enjoy, as well as what brought (and ultimately kept) them working together. It’s a rare glimpse into two creators who have enjoyed wide & varied careers.
